Mexico meets USA in the North & Central America Gold Cup final. The match will be played on Monday, July 8th at Soldier Field (Chicago)
Mexico is traditionally considered one of the leading teams of North and Central America: it regularly qualifies for the World Championships and regularly gives battle even to the top teams. What to say about the North American competitions - the Mexicans, if not dominate, then achieve fantastic success. They won the CONCACAF Gold Cup 10 times and qualified for the World Cup more often than the famous national teams, such as Uruguay, France, England and Spain, and they are worthy. But, frankly, I do not really like what the Mexicans show under Gerardo Martino’s management, compared to what happened with Juan Carlos Osorio. This is sometimes projected on the results: yes, the group stage was very confident, yes, a draw and a penalty shootout with the Costa Rican national team can be understood (after all, Costa Ricans are strong now), but personally for me, the game against Haiti left few positive impressions in terms of football of the national team of Mexico. Nevertheless, the factor of whom the Mexicans play against will also play in the upcoming game. Here we must understand that the game in the playoffs against the current champions of the tournament is always an opportunity to show themselves. Many people in the Mexican national team want to do this, but we should consider that some of the players are in fairly respectable, by the standards of football, age (some of them may no longer take part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup).

The USA team has a slightly different situation: they are full of youngsters, while there is now quite a strong emphasis on youth teams, and many football fans in the US are closely watching the success of junior teams. Many of those juniors are at the CONCACAF Gold Cup now. The game of the Americans does not cause any obvious negative emotions, but they also had showed not the brightest matches, for example, the quarterfinal against the Curacao national football team (a 1:0 victory). If we take exclusively football and its quality, the USA left, probably, the most pleasant impression in this tournament. But this, in addition to their game, is due to several factors: 1) the US team had a crisis, and yet there is a joy from its returning to the previous level; it enhances this effect; 2) Mexico, by its standards, plays so-so. The key phrase here was “by its standards”.
I’ll proceed from this: yes, the USA approved itself brighter at this CONCACAF Gold Cup, and Mexico showed a little decline, but this decline (if you can call it that) was not critical, and the Greens are still a very formidable force in CONCACAF. There is still a need to pay attention to the experience of the Mexicans, and many of its players will be strongly motivated, because some of them, perhaps, will not participate in the next CONCACAF Gold Cup. I understand that this is risky, but, nevertheless, my prediction is Mexico’s victory.
Prediction for the match: Mexico to win
