Melgar take on the visitors Patronato in round 5 match of Copa Libertadores group stage. The match will be played on Wednesday, June 7th at Estadio Monumental Virgen de Chapi (Arequipa).
Melgar are no longer fighting for anything in the tournament. In recent years, the "Rojinegros" have gained momentum, as demonstrated last season when they won the Peruvian Apertura and reached the semifinals of the Copa Sudamericana, their best performance in their over a century-long history. However, in the Copa Libertadores, this team proved to be non-competitive. They managed to start with a 1-1 draw at home against Olimpia Asuncion. But then they lost all three matches, twice to Colombian side Atletico Nacional and 1-4 in Argentina. Their last match remains only to protect their reputation, as they play it at home.

Patronato had a highly contradictory previous year. "Santo" achieved their greatest triumph in history in 2022 by winning the Argentine Cup. To do so, they had to defeat teams like River Plate and Boca Juniors, and ultimately face Talleres from Cordoba in the final. However, by the end of the year, the team was relegated from the local Primera Division. As a result, they are currently fighting for promotion (which has been unsuccessful so far, with only a third of the matches in the second division won and diminishing chances). At the same time, thanks to their cup title, they are participating in the Copa. As mentioned earlier, they defeated Melgar but lost all their other matches.
On May 5th (European time), the teams played their first head-to-head match. The home team has one last chance to secure at least 3rd place in the group. It is unlikely that the Argentinians will be able to replicate their home triumph even partially. We bet that Melgar will seek revenge and win against Patronato.
