It's likely that Union Berlin exhausted their luck limit last season, reaching the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. However, fortunes can be fickle. For some time, Union even found themselves in the relegation zone, below Mainz. However, after finishing the group stage of the Champions League, when the players from the capital no longer had to juggle two fronts, Union improved their game. In the last five rounds, they earned as many points as in the previous 11. While three of these five matches were home games for Berliners, including victories against Cologne (2-0) and Borussia Monchengladbach (3-1), along with a draw against Augsburg (1-1), they also avoided defeat in their recent away game in January, playing out a goalless draw against strong Freiburg, who are certainly no weaker than Mainz.
Undoubtedly, Union are underperforming this season, but even in their current state, they do not look like clear outsiders compared to today's Mainz. Especially considering that towards the end of the calendar year, Berliners seemed to be regaining form, almost stopping their losing streak. It's unlikely that they will lose to Mainz, who celebrated victory only once in 17 league matches. In my opinion, Union are quite capable of securing at least a draw at the MEWA Arena.
