Liverpool take on the visitors Wolverhampton in the round 1/32 finals of English FA Cup. The match will be played on Saturday, January 7th at Anfield (Liverpool).
Liverpool actually failed the starting segment of this season. Not completely, of course - the Super Cup was taken, with a victory over Manchester City there, passed once again in the playoffs of the Champions League. But still, the Premier League was an indicator, and an abundance of problems in it, which is why the giant left the quartet of leaders for a long break. This helped in some way: they reacted to problems with the attack (injuries to Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz, with a caveat - also Firmino, as well as the departure of Mane and the level of implementation of moments by Darwin Nunez) they reacted by winning the dispute for signing Cody Gakpo. Yes, they in the League Cup to City. But then it turned out in the Premier League, where the result was needed more, at Aston Villa and Leicester. However, then the grand ran into Brentford, to whom they lost 1-3.
Wolverhampton are somewhat similar to their next opponent: in winter they need to work on correcting the mistakes that were made in the starting, summer-autumn segment. Although, of course, the tasks here are more modest, in fact, it all came down to survival in the Premier League. Bruno Lage worked well last season, it even turned out to add compared to 2020/2021. But then there was not the best start, and the dismissal of the Portuguese at least did not help in itself, because Julen Lopetegui was convinced to come to Albion only in November, when the situation was already terrible. The Spaniard was able to win before the pause only in the cup format, against Leeds. In December, it also turned out to be expected to defeat the modest Gillingham, but, most importantly, it turned out on the road to issue a strong-willed 2-1 with Everton, with the decisive goal in the 95th minute. Wolves looked solid against Manchester United, but still in the middle of the 2nd half, Marcus Rashford scored the only goal in the game. Lost points and in Birmingham towards the end of the match – where Aston Villa leveled the score by 1-1.
Wolverhampton last won a head-to-head in 2019, by the way, also in the cup format. After that, Liverpool emerged victorious from already 7 head-to-head matches in a row. The Reds, of course, are the favorite in the pair, but still, here both clubs are more likely to save energy in the Premier League, where the situation needs to be corrected. So we don’t expect many goals from this match - we bet on total under 3.0 goals.
Prediction for the match: Under 3.0 scored goals.
