Liverpool take on the visitors Newcastle in the round 20 match of English Premier League. The match will be played on Monday, January 1st at Anfield (Liverpool).
Liverpool managed to turn their own misfortune to their advantage. Yes, they missed out on the Champions League, but also the associated workload that comes with that tournament. Yes, there is the Europa League, but there isn't the same pressure or motivation, and even the semi-reserve squad handles it. For example, in the League Cup, where they unexpectedly secured a 5-1 victory over West Ham in December and advanced to the semifinals. The peak of success for the Merseysiders, who currently have enough potential to squeeze opponents and secure victories (how many willful victories have there been!), could have been the Premier League, where they managed to take the lead in winter. However, old rivals put sticks in their wheels. First, Manchester United held them to a 0-0 draw, and then Arsenal, quickly scoring and conceding only once in response, retained the lead for themselves, despite all the discussions about Edegor's hand and Trent's shot hitting the crossbar. Even Tsimikas, breaking against Klopp, joined the already busy infirmary. Nevertheless, they defeated Burnley 2-0, and due to a new misstep by the Gunners, they became the leaders at the end of the first round of the Premier League.

Newcastle simply couldn't keep up with the pace of this season. Under Howe, the Magpies improved. In the previous season, Eddie took his wards to the League Cup final and, most importantly, spent the entire 2022/2023 season among the top four, ultimately finishing there. This returned the black and whites to the Champions League after a long break. They looked decent there, took 4 points from PSG, and could have taken more. But a couple of defeats to Borussia and, most importantly, the lost match to Milan in the 6th round sent them to the final 4th, last place. Then there was a new failure: in the League Cup, the team that had passed City and United led after 90 minutes against Chelsea, but Mudrik punished Trippier for a mistake, leveling the score. The 1-1 turned into a penalty shootout, where Petkovic, the goalkeeper of the Blues, whom few knew, won. Meanwhile, the tired and battered team, plagued by injuries, began to stumble in the Premier League: they lost heavily to Everton and Tottenham, were dry defeated even by the newcomer, Luton, and the recently changed manager Nottingham Forest.
Despite all the progress under Howe, they started playing worse against the Reds, constantly losing. Even in August, leading and playing in the majority, the Magpies managed to concede twice in the final stages. The Merseysiders are really good and highly motivated now. Let's bet on their victory with a handicap of -1 goal scored.
Prediction for the match: Liverpool to win with -1.0 handicap.
