Liverpool take on the visitors Chelsea in the round 22 match of English Premier League. The match will be played on Wednesday, January 31st at Anfield (Liverpool).
Liverpool manages to surprise with successes, seemingly even themselves. The Reds finished fifth in the last Premier League campaign. It was a failure that cost them a place in the Champions League. But, on the other hand, everyone expected the Reds, with one foot, without straining the stars, to pass the group stage of the weaker Europa League – and so it happened. But in roughly the same manner, fielding a less than optimal lineup, the Reds briskly made it to the League Cup semifinals. Already there, after conceding first, they won at home against Fulham. It wasn't easy in London, despite an early goal, but in the end, it ended in a draw, which was enough to advance to the final. Almost simultaneously, riding their luck (the decisive moment was Kiver's own goal), they knocked out Arsenal from the FA Cup. Well, they didn't particularly notice Norwich, thrashing a convenient and currently quite weak opponent. But, most importantly, they managed to lead in the Premier League, showing the ability to snatch victories, often through late, determined goals. Or, as with Bournemouth, without Salah and many other key players, they thrashed a fairly strong opponent 4-0. Perhaps, even then, the players knew that Klopp had decided to leave Anfield in the summer, and they are trying to make sure he does it triumphantly?

Chelsea in the previous season, despite spending a lot of money, finished in the lower half of the final Premier League table. It seemed like Bouli spared no expense – once again setting a transfer record not only in Britain but in the entire football world. He even convinced Pochettino to return to London to coach – and Mauricio weighed all the pros and cons for a long time but eventually agreed. In practice, however, the interim results (31 points after 21 rounds and a place in the bottom half of the top-10) mean that thinking about saving the 2023/2024 campaign has to be in the context of cup tournaments. And there are some decent successes. In the League Cup, after dramatically beating Newcastle (Mudryk equalized literally out of nowhere, catching Trippier's clumsy touch), they clashed with Middlesbrough in the semifinals. The first away match ended in defeat. At home with Carrick's boys, they showed off – but what mistakes they made, how they brought it – the opening goal was an own goal for a reason. Three days later in London, in the League Cup format, such a serious opponent as Aston Villa came to visit. And there, there weren't any goals scored at all.
In August, the sides played out a 1-1 draw in the British capital. This is already the 7th head-to-head match between these giants to end in a draw in regular time. The Reds are not higher in the table than the Blues for nothing, they are also stronger. Betting on the Premier League leader to win at home.
Prediction for the match: Liverpool to win.
