Farul Constanta take on the visitors Sheriff Tiraspol in the first leg of 1/8-finals in UEFA Champions League qualification playoffs. The match will be played on Wednesday, June 12th at Central Stadium Hagi Academy (Ovidiu).
For "Farul," this is their first similar experience. "The Sailors" have a complicated history. If we set aside the majority of their not-so-rich biography (despite winning the cup, including a recent one in 2005), and focus only on the current period, with bankruptcy, a drop to semi-amateur level, and the merger with "Viitorul," it should be acknowledged that the renewed version, with the majority owner being "Carpathian Maradona," Gheorghe Hagi (other successful local footballers such as Gheorghe Popescu and Ciprian Marica also play important roles), appears to be the most successful. "The People from Constanta," who currently play in Ovidiu, became the champions of Romania in the previous season. Consequently, they also earned the right to make their full debut on the European stage. If we exclude the attempts made by "Viitorul" (which, by the way, were unconvincing and infrequent), "Farul" has only played in the Intertoto Cup a couple of times before.

"Sheriff" will attempt to replicate the success of 2021. "The Black-Yellows" are much more prestigious compared to their first opponent in the new cycle. "The Wasps" from Tiraspol, founded in 1997, have already been champions of Moldova 21 times, not to mention other national trophies. They have consistently performed well in European competitions. The breakthrough came in the penultimate season with their debut in the group stage of the Champions League, victories against "Shakhtar" and Madrid's "Real," and a third-place finish in a challenging group. A year ago, they managed to pass through the qualifications against "Zrinjski" and "Maribor," but "Viktoria" Plzen won 2-1 both in the Czech Republic and away. After defeating "Pyunik," Roberto Bordina's team only won against "Omonia" in the Europa League group stage, which was enough for a third position in the quartet. As a result, the representative of Moldova moved on to the third tournament of the season, the Conference League. They pleasantly surprised everyone by eliminating "Partizan," but then faced "Nice" and suffered a couple of defeats.
The clubs represent neighboring and closely related countries, and geographically Tiraspol and Constanta are located quite close to each other. However, the teams have not crossed paths even in friendly matches. Romanians are considered the favorites, at least at home. However, the guests are significantly more experienced, especially in terms of European competitions. We recommend betting on "The Black-Yellows" not to lose.
Prediction for the match: Sheriff Tiraspol not to lose (X2).
