Croatia take on the visitors Wales in the round 1 match of UEFA Euro 2024 qualification. The match will be played on Saturday, March 25th at Stadion Poljud (Split).
Croatia have been performing excellently under Zlatko Dalic. By 2022, however, the Croatians were in excellent form. They managed to come back from a slow start of 1 point in their first two June matches, then won all four games to overtake Denmark and France at the top. They then went on to Qatar, where they played the maximum number of matches once again. However, this time Modric and his company were not allowed into the final by the Argentinians, who beat them 3-0. Nevertheless, with a 2-1 victory over Morocco in the consolation match, the team earned a bronze medal. It is worth noting that the team is largely the same as before, except for Lovren and Vrsaljko who retired, and the injured Susic and Kalinic. Chalet-Cesar and Budimir were not called up, but they did not play much in the past either.

Wales did not impress with their football, but they have persistently achieved fairly good results lately. Of course, their standout performance was the semifinals of Euro 2016, but Rob Page's men also made it to the playoffs in the next continental tournament. They then qualified for the World Cup, defeating Austria and Ukraine in the playoffs. That success with the "yellow-blues" has been the last one so far. In the Nations League, the Welsh were essentially redundant, taking only one point in six games (losing to Belgium and Poland, and the Netherlands). And most importantly, their long-awaited return to the World Cup (since their participation in the 1958 tournament) turned out to be a failure, not to say a "fiasco". They were lucky to earn and convert a penalty in the end against the United States, drawing the game. But then they lost to Iran and England with a combined score of 0-5, ending their run. After that, Bale, Wales' number one star (as well as other options, Gunter and Allen), retired. There are hardly any new names, although there are now four debutants, including 17-year-old Harris from Fulham.
The "checkerboards" have had 4 wins in 6 matches with a couple of draws in head-to-heads. However, the last match in 2019 ended up in a 1-1 draw at Wales' home ground.
