Charleroi hosts KV Mechelen in round 23 of the Belgian Jupiler League. The match will be played on Tuesday, February 11th at Stade du Pays de Charleroi (Charleroi)
In the previous round, Charleroi simply smashed one of the contenders for a place in the top six, Zulte Waregem (4-0). The Zebras are on the fourth line. They have a gap of 10 points from 7th place, and there are only six rounds before the finish of the main part of the championship. Based on this, we can say that we’ll see Charleroi in the championship group. But this does not mean that the Zebras will begin to play half-heartedly. Nothing like that, they need to score points now and as much as possible. After a group of six lucky ones is formed, all of their points will be divided in half. Therefore, the standings may well change after the 30th round. And based on the strategy, it’s easier to gain a certain margin of safety now, taking points from teams like Eupen, Zulte or Mechelen.

Mechelen had excellent chances to jump into the championship six, which it closed for some time, by the way. And it may still break through there now. 3 points separate Mechelen from the sixth Genk. However, there are two significant BUTs in this situation. The first BUT is Anderlecht, who has as many points as Mechelen. And the second BUT is Mechelen itself. It lacks strength and stability for the whole distance of the tournament. The team lost in the last three matches in the championship. In the last one, Mechelen even managed to lose to the last Cercle Brugge, which will relegate from the league directly (it won’t win back a six-point gap to the penultimate place). Moreover, the upcoming visitors have serious problems with the squad, and it is another plus for the hosts who are very strong in their arena.
I don’t see any reason, for which Mechelen will manage to earn at least one point in the upcoming match. Charleroi won eight of 12 home games. It even tied with leading Brugge. And I think the Zebras are unlikely to give points to the newcomer to the league at home.
Prediction for the match: Charleroi to win
