Betis hosts Celtic in round 1 of the Europa League group stage. The match will be played on Thursday, September 16th at Estadio Benito Villamarín (Sevilla)
In 2020, the management of Betis invited Manuel Pellegrini. An experienced Chilean specialist once made a name for himself in Europe in LaLiga, working with Villarreal and Malaga (Real Madrid was between them, but without much success). Then Manuel didn’t achieve success at West Ham, but he was given a chance in Seville. And the Latin American coach immediately took 6th place in the last draw of the Spanish Championship. This was enough to get a ticket to the Europa League. But at the same time, Betis is not particularly shining right now. In August, the Green-and-Whites earned only two points in three rounds (draws against Mallorca and Cadiz and a minimal defeat to Real Madrid). After a pause for the matches of the national teams, Beticos went to Granada and finally won. But Canales scored a decisive goal only in the 89th minute (1-2)!

Celtic failed last season. Their championship cycle has ended — Steven Gerrard raised Rangers to such a level that they finally threw their neighbors off the top of the podium. And the Celts themselves looked frankly weak in the 2020/2021 championship. They started the new season with a new coach, Ange Postecoglou. So far, the Australian leaves a very contradictory impression with his first job as a coach in Europe. Celtic immediately left the Champions League qualification, losing to Midtjylland (1-1 and 1-2). And in the Premiership, the debut match brought a defeat to Hearts (and then there were 0-1 in the Old Firm Derby). We cannot but note the departure of such players as Ayer, Griffiths, Ntcham, Edouard, and Christie. Still, the Scots made it to the group round of the Europa League. They dealt with Jablonec (4-2 and 3-0) and then knocked out tough AZ Alkmaar (2-0 at home and 1-2 in Alkmaar).
Betis does not play particularly regularly in European cups. Therefore, it should not be surprising that the Spaniards will hold their first match against Celtic. The Scots have been dangerous mostly at home in their best years. Betis should beat the guests from Scotland on the native pitch.
Prediction for the match: Betis to win
