Bayern Munich take on the visitors Freiburg in the round 7 match of German Bundesliga. The match will be played on Sunday, October 8th at Allianz Arena (Munich).
In any Bundesliga match, especially at home, Bayern Munich are considered a favorite by default. We're accustomed to that. However, offering odds of less than 1.2 for a Bayern Munich victory in a match against Freiburg are simply disrespectful to their opponent. In six rounds of the championship, Bayern have essentially only secured two significant victories, both against teams from the lower half of last season's table, Werder Bremen and Bochum. So, where does this confidence come from that Bayern will crush Freiburg, who finished fifth in the Bundesliga just a year ago? RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen have already shown this season that Bayern can drop points (2-2 draws in both matches). Modest by today's standards, Borussia Monchengladbach only lost to the champion 1-2, and Augsburg lost 1-3.

Freiburg at the start of the championship are not as convincing as they were in the previous season, of course. And it's highly unlikely that Christian Streich's team will follow the path of Mainz and Hertha Berlin to snatch points from Bayern. However, at the very least, they are capable of not suffering a heavy defeat in Munich. Over six rounds, they had a complete disaster just once when they suffered a 0-5 loss to Stuttgart, who were on fire at the start of the season. Yes, there was also a defeat to Borussia Dortmund, but it was by a two-goal margin. In the rest of their matches, Freiburg secured three wins and a draw. This team is perfectly capable of putting up a fight in Munich.
The bookmakers seem to have shown a bit too much disrespect to Freiburg by offering such a minuscule coefficient for Bayern Munich's victory. It's as if Bayern are playing this match against an amateur team rather than a team that has participated in European competitions for several years and was in contention for a Champions League spot until late in the previous season. Undoubtedly, the hosts are the clear favorites in this encounter. However, it's far from certain that Bayern will secure a big victory over their opponent. In their last ten head-to-head meetings, this has only happened twice. Last season, the teams faced each other three times, and in two of those occasions, Freiburg put up a commendable fight: a 0-1 loss and a 2-1 victory. My prediction is a handicap of (+2.5) for the visitors.
Prediction for the match: Freiburg to win with +2.5 handicap.
