Arsenal vs Liverpool Prediction 7 January 2023

Arsenal take on the visitors Liverpool in the round 1/32-finals of English FA Cup. The match will be played on Sunday, January 7th at Emirates Stadium (London).

Arsenal, historically a grand club in English football, experienced a resurgence in recent years under Arsène Wenger's management, winning numerous trophies. However, they struggled to secure a top-four spot in the last years of Wenger's tenure, and Unai Emery, his successor, failed to make a significant impact. Mikel Arteta faced challenges as well, but his status as a former captain gave him more leeway, culminating in a surprising second-place finish in the Premier League last season. Now the task was to prove that it wasn't just a one-time leap. Strengthening the squad with signings like Ben White (for over 100 million – a record, of course) seemed to have worked. Currently, Zinchenko and the team have confidently returned to the Champions League, securing a place in the knockout stage, winning the English Super Cup and being the Christmas champions. However, they were eliminated from the League Cup and lost their Premier League leadership after a 0-2 defeat to West Ham, followed by a 1-2 loss to Fulham, dropping to the 4th position in the table.

Liverpool are currently achieving success in various competitions. The Merseysiders had an unsuccessful season last year, failing to qualify for the Champions League. However, this eased their schedule this season. In the summer, despite some reservations, the squad became deeper and more diverse with new signings. Working on the defense and reviving their ability to turn matches and score decisive goals in the closing stages, the Reds are now achieving significant success. Few doubted they would advance early to the Europa League knockout stage, achieved by a rotated and often experimental lineup in the fall. They also reached the League Cup semifinals, eliminating West Ham in the quarterfinals. Most importantly, the Reds not only returned to the top of the Premier League but finished the first round as leaders. Despite Dubravka's heroics in goal (he even saved a penalty from Salah), Newcastle was eventually defeated 4-2.

In the past calendar year, the two giants faced each other twice at Anfield, securing two draws with goals, including a recent 1-1 stalemate by the Gunners. Although the Gunners play at home, and the motivation for the visitors is questionable, we still place our bet on a neutral total over 2.5 goals scored.

Prediction for the match: Over 2.5 scored goals.
