The hosts of the tournament France take in Ireland in round of 16 clash of Euro 2016. The match is taking place at Stade Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday, June 26th.
Despite taking the first place in the group with seven points after three matches, France left quite ambiguous impression so far. Descamps’ men struggled to gain two wins over mediocre Romania and Albania, who already left the competition. Both matches were won with late goals despite numerous chances created. Third match against Switzerland was more like a friendly match as scoreless draw was the results that suites both sides. France national team is undefeated in seven matches in a row and won 11 out of their last 13 matches with one draw and one defeat. However, it appears the team would struggle when they face top level opponent at it had to call the hosts favorites of the tournament at the moment.

Ireland were lucky to advance for the next stage as they defeated Italy on their last matchday, who had no objectives and wouldn’t move from the first place in the group regardless of the results of third round. Ireland had only one point before the clash against Italy that was taken after 1-1 draw with Sweden. Ireland needed only three points and they gained them after Brady late strike on 85th minute of scoreless match against reserve players of the team. This results allowed the team to take third place in the group with four points and advance for the knockout stage.
France and Ireland played their first ever head-to-head back in 1953. The opponents met 12 times in their history. Six of these matches ended with triumphs of France, four time Ireland were victorious and two matches ended with draws. Despite quite mediocre results, Deschamp’s men should advance for the next round as much more skilled side. Ireland wasn’t expected to advance for the playoffs and it’s fair to say they have already exceeded expectations.
Prediction for the match: France to win.
